Why should I replace my gutters?

Even the best gutters need to be replaced at some point. The end of a gutter’s useful life can vary according to the type of gutter material chosen, how the gutter system was installed, how often the gutters have been cleaned and maintained, and how much exposure to the elements the gutters have endured. When gutters begin to deteriorate due to age, a new gutter installation may be necessary.

Some homeowners choose to replace gutters for aesthetic reasons. Aging gutters can stain, rust, bend from tree branches, or shift out of alignment. When gutters begin to look unsightly, some opt for a new gutter installation.

How do I choose the right gutters for my home?

The type of product you choose for your gutter installation can depend on several factors, including your budget, the style of your home, the look you prefer, and how much maintenance you are willing to do. In general, half-round gutters are easier to clean than k-style, and gutter guards make maintenance a breeze. Consult with your gutter installer on material durability, price comparisons, aesthetics, and other factors.

Some gutter products come in many different colors and finishes. For example, we offer 21 different colors in the half-round style of gutters. Ask your gutter installer for the options in gutter finishes.

What kind of gutter material is the best for my gutter installation?

There is no single best material for gutter installation. Many kinds of gutter materials will work well for a  home. It often becomes a question of budget and aesthetics.

Some materials are superior in durability, but the thickness of a gutter product is a consideration that may factor into your budget. Some gutter materials, such as copper, can last up to 80 years when well-maintained. Other gutter materials, such as vinyl, last only about 10 years. Generally, heavy-gauge aluminum gutters are much more durable than vinyl and will hold up for about 20 years in most climates.

You can also refer to other articles in this blog for more specific information about different types of gutter products, such as seamless, half-round, heavy-gauge aluminum, and gutter guards.

How many downspouts does my home need?

As a general rule, your gutter contractor should install a downspout every 30 to 40 feet. For many homes, installing downspouts at both ends of the length of a house will suffice.

What size gutters do I need?

The most common residential size for gutter width is 5-inch for K-style gutters or 6-inch for half-round gutters. These gutter sizes should be able to handle precipitation on most houses in most parts of the country.

However, If your home has a steep roof, your home may need large capacity gutters and extra downspouts. Check with your gutter installer to determine the pitch of your roof and calculate the proper size for your gutter installation.
